Barrett Larson, MD

Founder & Director


As founder and director of the Stanford Anesthesia Innovation Lab, Dr. Larson is committed to rapidly translating medical device concepts into clinical practice.  He is an experienced entrepreneur and the recipient of numerous medical technology innovation awards.  He received his medical degree from Stanford and stayed there to do his residency training in anesthesiology.  He is co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Leaf Healthcare, a company developing revolutionary wireless patient monitoring tools for a variety of healthcare applications.  By operating at the interface between academics and industry, Dr. Larson is able to facilitate the commercialization of innovative medical technologies.


Larry Chu, MD, MS

Dr. Larry Chu is a core faculty member in the SAIL program and an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.  Dr. Chu runs the Anesthesia Informatics and Media (AIM) lab and also runs an RO1-funded clinical research laboratory.  Dr. Chu teaches courses at Stanford University on patient-centered design and how to apply innovation to improve healthcare.   Dr. Chu is a nationally recognized leader in medical education, clinical informatics, and mobile computing and is the Executive Director of Medicine X.

Bassam Kadry, MD

Dr. Bassam Kadry is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the Director of Technology Discovery at Stanford Medicine X and specializes in data-driven patient centered design. Dr. Kadry also co-directs two fellowship programs at Stanford in Digital Health/Entrepreneurship and Operating Room Management. Dr. Kadry is an expert in data visualization and optimization in healthcare and he lectures about novel applications of data analytics to improve performance, outcomes, patient experience, and costs.

Larry Bock

Larry Bock is the Founder and Executive Director of the USA Science and Engineering Festival – the nation’s largest celebration of science and engineering. Larry is also a Lux Capital Special Limited Partner and chairs Lux Ventures’ Advisory Board. Larry was also a General Partner of Avalon Ventures, a seed stage venture capital firm. He has been a founder or initial CEO in over 10 medical technology and pharmaceutical companies.  Larry Bock has aided in starting or financing 40 early-stage growth companies, with a combined market value of more than $30 billion.

Wendye Robbins, MD

Dr. Wendye Robbins is a core faculty member in the SAIL program and has extensive experience incubating and growing companies. Dr. Robbins has co-founded several biopharmaceutical companies, including NeurogesX (NASD: NGSX, acquired by Acorda Therapeutics, 2013), Limerick BioPharma, Labrys Biologics (acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, 2014), and Decibel Therapeutics (2013-2014, Third Rock Ventures). She has held positions of Chief Executive Officer, President, Director, and Chief Medical Officer, and raised over $200M in funding for these companies. Dr. Robbins is a board certified anesthesiologist and an Associate Professor in the Division of Pain Management at Stanford University School of Medicine.

William New, MD, PhD

Dr. William (Bill) New has more than 40 years of experience as an anesthesiologist, engineer, entrepreneur and educator.  He spent 25 years as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Stanford.  In 1981, Dr. New co-founded Nellcor Corporation, a medical device company that developed the first commercially successful pulse oximetry system.   Dr. New received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He also has a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, an M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine and a management degree from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Lawrence Siegel, MD

Dr. Lawrence Siegel has three decades of experience in medical device development, ranging from early invention through commercialization, including major corporate transactions.  He has served as Chief Medical Officer at ApniCure, PharmacoFore, and Satiety. He was Chief Technology Officer at Heartport and Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Stanford University, where he was chief of cardiovascular anesthesiology. He earned his BS in electrical engineering from MIT and his MD from the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology. He was a fellow in the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program and completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University.
